Working on something new

Yep, that is right!  We’re working on something new that we think you might like.

An Update One Year Later

The last blog post is dated “Sept 9, 2010”, which means the site has now been up for a year. Has it really been that long? Anyhow, here’s what’s been going down:

- The site was recently covered in the September issue of WIRED magazine (Infoporn: The Price of Pot) - check us out on page 36. (Thanks to TheFloatingSheep for doing the analysis/heat map)

- We’ve been continuing to collect data over the last year and now have over 30,000 submissions!

- Although we haven’t updated the site much over the past year, we do have some unreleased features that we’ve worked on! This includes plotting data for all countries, city-level prices, and an animated heatmap of price change over time. We’ll try to release these as soon as possible!

Cheers!

Apparently, we’re a big deal…

Hey everyone,

A lot has happened literally overnight. Yesterday, we posted our site on Reddit (special thanks to /r/trees for getting us off the ground!) and HackerNews which got quite a bit of attention. Apparently, marijuana is a hot topic these days. Anyway, we have since been picked up by a few news outlets including Business Insider, Gawker, TIME, CBS, and a pending article on ABC.

We’ve been working hard to add new features to the site and will continue to do so. Here is what is currently new with the site:

  1. 3000 submissions!!
  2. More accurate prices - The average prices for different regions have now been corrected for statistical outliers. This removes potentially fake entries that skew the prices, thus providing more accurate estimates.
  3. Social metrics - We have begun surveying people about the social views on marijuana in their area (law enforcement, social acceptance, etc.). This survey can be seen after a price has been submitted to the site. This  will be displayed on the site once we have collected sufficient data.

Here is what we’ve prioritized for the coming days:

  1. Add Europe to GoogleMaps Visualization - we’ve been getting a lot of requests to add their regions to our GoogleMaps visualization. However, due to lack of data, we were only able to North America. However, with all the new submissions we will be able to add Europe to the map soon.
  2. Easier to browse data - we’ll be making it easier to browse and search different regions and cities. Can’t believe we havn’t added this yet.
  3. More visualizations - we want to add new ways to visualize the data on our site. One thing we have in mind is to plot the change in price in California after Prop19 passes. If you have any other ideas, please, please email priceofweed@gmail.com.

Thanks!

We launched a week ago, here are some updates

Click here to see our Google maps mashup and regional price averages!

Hey guys,

We’ve been getting a great response for our site over the last week or so since we’ve launched. We’ve received a bunch of great suggestions and over 600 anonymous price submissions from around the world!

Some new things we’ve added to the site:

  1. Added metric units for submissions (grams).
  2. Users can now manually select their location.
  3. Region pages now show the average prices.
  4. Added a simple Google maps mashup (USA and Canada only right now, rest of the world will come once we have more data).

We hope to add some more ways to visualize the data. Right now though, we just really need more data to work with. As always, let us know if you have any suggestions!
